"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"

Tara Curley is a leader in health and safety, particularly in the heavy construction industry, for over 20 years, with extensive and diverse experience in Canada and abroad. She has been instrumental in the development and implementation of industry-leading health, safety and environmental programs for the diverse portfolios of GFL, including and up to COR certification, ISO 45001 certification and recognition through the Supporting Ontario’s Safe Employees program. Tara has contributed greatly to building the top of industry safety culture at GFL.
Like many safety professionals in Canada who have come from a wide array of backgrounds and brought their unique experiences to the sector to build a rich network of OHS professionals using their talents to create a safer environment for workers, Tara built her experience in safety before moving from Ireland to Canada. She went to school for occupational health and safety over two decades ago. She has wide and varied experience in OHS, from her current consulting role to her previous experience teaching safety
in Toronto.
She says that safety is a “relatively new career choice in Canada,” meaning that the sector is still shifting and changing as it solidifies into a profession. An expert in construction safety, Tara says that
she loves the “ever-changing landscape of the construction industry and the challenges that every project presents.”
Nevertheless, she says that this area can also be difficult to navigate. “The construction industry is still a male-dominated world and can be tough for females starting out and [pursuing] their careers.” However, she says that the industry has also come a long way and can offer a very rewarding career for women “who don’t mind getting their boots dirty.”
Ultimately, “there is still a lot of work to do to achieve full equality and representation.”
In the same vein, she is keen to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace because health and safety teams should be reflective of the workforce. “I believe it’s very important to have a very diverse team with many backgrounds so we can offer the best support to our workforce,” she says.
Tara, who has been named a Top Woman in Safety for the second year running, says that she feels “blessed and grateful to be included with such a distinguished group of ladies for a second year in a row.”
With over two decades of experience, she knows a thing or two about the qualities of a good safety leader. She says it’s far from being a personal endeavour. “Building a great team is key to effective leadership in safety," she says. "I’m lucky throughout my career to have worked with some of the best safety professionals in the industry.”
Having a great team around her is important for an OHS professional because the role can be highly demanding. “Health and safety as a career choice can be a thankless role and can be undervalued as it is not revenue creating,” she says. “An effective leader finds the best and creates the opportunities for [professionals] to grow and excel, and also champions their careers.”
