"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"

Mallory Corbett is an accomplished environment, health, and safety (EHS) leader with more than 20 years of progressive management experience in a range of sectors and jurisdictions, including her current role as a senior EHS manager at Emergent BioSolutions, a company that develops, manufactures, and delivers protections against public health threats.
A passionate innovator and inclusive leader, Mallory is focused on maximizing employee safety through simple and engaging programs by championing operational excellence and innovation, and by tailoring programming to the needs of business and team members, all while driving long-term and sustainable change with a balanced risk-based approach.
Mallory got into the safety profession accidentally. She joined a manufacturing company’s management development program shortly after attaining her commerce degree. During this two-year program, there were three term positions in different functional areas, and things didn’t exactly go as planned.
“I was very disappointed that my first placement was in the safety department – truthfully. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a safety department,” she says. “I am pretty sure I went home and cried.” As someone who had majored in marketing at university, she had hoped to be placed in that department instead.
Nevertheless, after a tough evening, she went into work with a “renewed positive attitude” and the hope that she would make the most of her time in the safety department before going over to the marketing team. “In my term, though, I became very passionate about safety and building it into business outcomes to help employees avoid injury.”
“The feeling of being able to help swayed me, and I stayed in the field,” says Mallory, who has been in safety for over 20 years now.
Being part of Emergent BioSolutions has given her the opportunity to bring to life some truly innovative ideas. “Emergent, and in particular the Winnipeg site, trusted me as an environment, health and safety professional to put in place a holistic but never-before-tried program in an effort to reduce risk, increase proactive safety performance and enhance our safety culture. We penciled in targets, engaged every level of the organization, and jumped in two feet first.”
She says that the program proved to be successful on all levels, including being able to feel the maturing culture in how the organization talks about and responds to EHS-related hazards.
“While our entire organization is working to protect and enhance lives, this program allowed me the opportunity to partner with our functional teams to protect our employees.”
She is involved in pushing for better diversity, equity and inclusion within the company. In 2021, she was selected by her peers to be the co-chair of its inaugural women’s employee resource group called Emerging Women.
Mallory says that finding the right balance in her life has been a challenge, whether it be home and work, career development and family time, personal growth and professional growth or self-care and investment in work. “They all take balance, and there have been times that it has been difficult to strike.”
Being selected at one of the 2022 Top Women in Safety is a “very humbling experience,” she says. “Balancing being a single mother of two boys with a strong desire for professional growth in a male-dominated field has not always been easy. There have been long days, tears, and trade-offs, so being recognized for my contributions is definitely a career highlight.”
