"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"
Andrew mcquiston,
west oak family office, wellington-altus private wealth
Angie Trumpler grew up in rural Ontario, where her family ran a successful horticulture business from their farm. She understood as a child the value of hard work and dedication, and her interest in safety started when they acquired horses at a very young age. “Being around animals will make you cultivate a safety culture based on mutual respect pretty quick, and I found out that I not only enjoyed but had an intuitive sense when they became injured to bring them back to optimal health.” Her safety skills were further developed when she joined Cadets as an early teenager. “The experience really pushed me out of my comfort zone and competing on a level playing field as the boys was a big confidence booster. But it was here that I was able to participate and take training in the emergency medical field.”
So she decided to pursue a career as a medical technician after school. However, she found out that Honda of Canada Mfg was hiring right in her hometown, and she put her resume in. When she started at the company, she realized that “they had incredible incentives for you to take training to better yourself.”
She started work on the production line and just months later, for the company’s internal medical team which she describes as a “groundbreaking” experience. Angie was one of two associates selected to become in-house first-aid instructors for Honda, which she did for 20 years. She worked closely with the in-house fire department, sparking a passion that led her to become a volunteer firefighter. Angie says that her firefighting career has given her a “unique insight into safety – you need to handle yourself under extreme pressure, you need to instill confidence and face the situation with the highest degree of dignity and compassion that you can bring to the table.”
Angie has been with Honda for 33 years. Fourteen years ago, she made the switch to safety “because it was always pulling at my heartstrings. I always wanted to be a safety lead.” When she became a department safety rep, she started looking for ways to move ahead and become a resident expert in the safety field so that she could better serve her associates and departments. She has worked in or with every department at the plant. Eventually, she transferred to the heavy manpower department Assembly Frame – “my safety career really blossomed there; it was incredible. I just felt so fulfilled working with others, making systems stronger, creating a 'safety for everyone' culture and in the background, I was building an incredible safety career.”
Angie now concentrates her efforts on construction safety, being involved in every aspect of construction that takes place at the corporate level. She ensures safety protocols – including significant crane lifts, building expansions, and others – are integrated into the project well before the project ever starts. Angie is an ever-present reassuring safety presence on-site.
She is incredibly passionate about learning about safety and loves being able to transfer her knowledge to others to empower them to embrace a "safety first" mindset. Being chosen as one of the 2022 Top Women in Safety is an "honour."
Angie says that as a career, safety provides everything – “it allows you to go wherever you want in this vast field.” There is so much choice and so many aspects of safety to look into. She says that being at Honda of Canada Mfg for so many years has allowed her safety career to flourish. “It’s a remarkable place, and I have had the opportunity to do amazing work with others that still fills me with excitement every single day!” Angie says that the organization has “brilliant minds” and a dynamic which allows workers to “embrace your dream, and then make your dream a reality.”
