“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Sandra Dorman has served as the Director of the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health since 2015. As a scientist, Dorman's interests have always focused on health promotion and disease prevention. However, she did not initially recognize the intersection of these disciplines with Occupational Health and Safety until she began working with colleagues at Laurentian. She was mentored by Dr. Tammy Eger, Mr. Ric DeMeulles, and Mr. Leo Gerard, who helped her realize the significant impact that work has on everyone’s health. Dorman has been working in the Faculty of Health at Laurentian University since 2003 and became a Full Professor in 2018. She completed her doctoral degree in physiology/pharmacology at McMaster University in 2003 and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Guelph in 1998.
As Director, Dorman actively leads the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH) in achieving its vision and mission focusing on creating a Northern Ontario where people collaborate to address critical workplace challenges. Since CROSH’s inception in 2008, with the support of the community and Advisory Board, the center achieved provincial recognition and financial backing, expanded its reach to remote communities through the development of a Mobile Lab, and built a one-of-a-kind Workplace Simulator to replicate work in Northern industries. Under Dorman’s leadership, CROSH has awarded $306,000 in student scholarships, placed 106 students in paid workplace internships and raised over $10 Million dollars in Centre funding. Dorman has had the privilege of working with leaders, health and safety specialists, and students, gaining insights into the industries in Northern Ontario and the challenges faced by workers. Her passion for this work stems from witnessing the meaningful change that occurs when people collaborate to improve workplace health and safety.
