“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Josie Erzetic is the President and CEO of the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), Ontario’s electrical safety regulator with a mandate to protect Ontarians from the risk of electrical harm in all settings — at home, at work and in public spaces.
As the leader of an organization with such a broad safety mandate, Erzetic has to thoughtfully organize priorities.
“My biggest challenge is balancing short-term performance goals with long-term strategic needs. I need to ensure that the organization meets its immediate financial targets and operational goals while also investing in innovation, talent development, and strategic initiatives that will drive future success in an evolving world.”
When setting objectives, Erzetic works closely with her team to establish a clear vision and strategic goals that are communicated internally to employees and externally to stakeholders.
“I have built a strong leadership team which is responsible for fostering a corporate culture that is accountable and adaptable to a changing energy landscape and new technology,” she explains. “Good relationships with employees, safety partners, the government and the public are necessary to build trust and support for the company's vision.”
Achieving a CEO position has not been without challenges and Erzetic attributes her success to resilience.
She says, “As a woman in the energy sector for years, you must be acutely aware of conscious and unconscious biases, as well as resistance to change. I have overcome challenges through building a strong peer and personal support network, maintaining an attitude of continuous learning and improvement as well as, of course, finding humour in certain situations.”
Embracing innovation is one of Erzetic’s calling cards, as she is a firm believer in data-driven decision making. The ESA utilizes data analytics to identify the safety issues of greatest risk to the public.
“I have championed the company’s Risk-Based Oversight approach, as well as our Harm Life Cycle Committee, which identifies safety issues, tracks and actions them. I have also spearheaded an education-first approach to safety compliance.”
The ESA’s corporate goals also prioritize “on-the-spot" education and safety interactions between their inspectors and Licensed Electrical Contractors (LECs) that result in improved safety outcomes for workers and the public.
Erzetic adds, “I also continue to champion more online services for our customers. As a regulator, we need to make it easier for our regulated communities and the public to interact with us to further foster ease of compliance.” Outside of her core role, Erzetic launched a podcast, Grounded in Ontario, to provide timely, detailed information about electrical safety issues to Ontario’s LECs and other interested listeners.
This year will see Erzetic lead the ESA into a new phase as it launches a new corporate strategic plan, Empowering Safety, Energizing Tomorrow, on April 1ˢᵗ. Its four pillars are:
