“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Adrian Malaryk is safety manager at Kiewit, one of North America’s largest construction and engineering organizations.
Her decision to enter the safety sector was inspired by witnessing the impact of workplace injuries in her local community in Saskatchewan.
After spells with construction and oil firms before assuming her current role, Malaryk has completed a decade in the industry.
“While I had a clear goal to work in safety, much of my journey has been shaped by seizing opportunities as they arose. Each new role or challenge has allowed me to refine my skills and expand my impact, leading to a rewarding and purposeful career.”
A significant element of Malaryk’s success has been down to her attitude of leading and mentoring.
“The single biggest achievement of my career has been leading and managing safety teams and witnessing their growth and development. Helping team members build their confidence, expand their expertise, and step into leadership roles has been incredibly fulfilling,” she says. “Seeing their contributions strengthen the safety culture on projects and knowing I’ve played a part in their professional journey is a source of immense pride. It reinforces my belief in the value of mentorship and the ripple effect of investing in people.”

Being a woman in a male-dominated industry, has also given Malaryk the benefit of a different viewpoint.
“It has strengthened my resolve and adaptability. My perspective as a woman has often brought a fresh approach to safety, emphasizing collaboration, empathy, and inclusivity. These qualities have helped me build trust and foster a strong safety culture across all levels of the workforce.”
Taking safety forward is also an important goal for Malaryk.
She is focused on leveraging cutting-edge technology, including wearable safety devices, drones, and AI-driven analytics, to enhance the ability to predict and prevent incidents at Kiewit.
Malarky comments, “By incorporating AI and data analytics, we can enhance our safety measures, optimize decision-making, and drive continuous improvements.”
A challenge that she overcomes on a daily basis is balancing proactive safety initiatives with reactive responses to evolving site conditions and incidents.
“To manage this, I prioritize open communication with my team, foster collaboration with supervisors and craft workers, and use data-driven strategies to address at-risk trends. Maintaining flexibility and staying solution-focused has been key to navigating these challenges effectively.”
Her significant achievements and progression have reaffirmed Malaryk’s belief that safety has an important role and is suited to her skillset.
She adds, “I’m deeply committed to making a positive impact, constantly seeking opportunities to learn and improve. I view challenges as opportunities for growth and believe in leading with integrity, empathy, and a clear vision for safety excellence.”
