“My role is to empower the workplace with a culture of continuous improvement that aligns with the principles of sustainable business,” says Marina Petrušić.
As the director of HSE at Mondelēz, Petrušić prioritizes making safety education accessible and approachable.
“When I’m creating programs, they must be personalized. Safety cannot be a rule on the wall; I aim to connect with the heart and mind of every individual,” she says.
In partnership with Spencer Beach, who became a motivational speaker after a serious injury from a workplace flash fire, Petrušić developed the program “Building a culture we can all be proud of.” Introduced in 2023, it aims to share the real-life experiences of those who have suffered occupational accidents.
“We brought [Beach] to every manufacturing site, distribution centre, and shift to have him share his story,” says Petrušić.
As part of the program, Petrušić has also organized more than 60 safety barbecues and celebrations.
For two years running, the director has received internal recognition at Mondelēz with awards including:
• 2024 Leader of the Year Award
• 2023 Individual Leadership Award in Transforming Safety Culture
Reflecting on her accolades, Petrušić says, “It was a testament to our collective effort, fostering top-tier performance and fueling the growth of both our people and our business.”
Looking to the future, Petrušić plans to further investigate the intersection between personal safety and physical and mental health.
She says, “What went wrong with an injury? How was the person feeling? What happened at home? What mindset did they have? Did they have the chance to sleep that night? That is such a gigantic part of it. There is a need to educate and equip people leaders on how to react and embrace these factors in a productive way.”
Complementing this is Petrušić’s Safety Moment initiative. Beginning in 2023, the director encouraged leaders within her organization to begin meetings by sharing a personal safety moment.
“Generic safety moments are forbidden,” she says. “I wanted people to dig deep and share anecdotes of injuries and experiences with mental or physical health. The CEO was doing it, and the chief supply chain officer was doing it, along with procurement and R&D. All departments were in the same boat to mould that caring mindset.”
As a safety leader, Petrusic says the most challenging part of the industry lies in dismantling preconceived notions and proving that diversity in background, competence, and gender goes a long way.
She says, “By championing inclusivity, we’re not just overcoming hurdles; we’re fostering a work environment that is sustainable in its commitment to diversity, equality, and resilience. Everybody benefits from that.”
