“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Starting at Hydro One over 24 years ago, in 2008, Janet Holt became the first female Customer and Business Services Manager in Distribution before transitioning to Health and Safety. As the company’s current Director of Health and Safety Field Support, she has made meaningful and measurable contributions.
After noticing repeated spikes in workplace incidents between June and September, Holt encouraged Hydro One’s leadership to adopt proactive measures to reduce workplace risks.
As a result of these efforts, between the summer months of 2022–23, Hydro One reported decreases across several metrics:

“People’s lives are at stake, especially at Hydro One, given the environment that we work in. Our goal is to eliminate all life-altering injuries and fatalities. We truly want everyone to go home to their friends and families at the end of the day,” says Holt.
As a collaborative and action-oriented leader, Holt is a member of two teams through the Edison Electric Institute – Future of Safety Metrics and Direct Controls.
She says, “One of the key areas that I want to focus on is continuing to strengthen safety culture, especially at the frontline, and ensuring that everyone wants to do the right thing, the right way, every time.”
Since moving Hydro One to the Edison Electric Institute Safety Classification and Learning model between 2022 and 2023, Hydro One has seen improvements in:
Serious Injury and Fatality rates: from 0.16 to 0.13
Reported near misses and safety catches: from 9,340 to 10,068
Workplace Safety Observations: from 12,515 to 14,505
“When we have an incident, we’ll rate it using this model. It’s not about blaming or finding fault,” says Holt. “It’s about learning from incidents that can potentially cause harm and and put proactive measures in place.”
Empowered to improve not just her organization but safety across the entire utilitiy industry, Holt frequently shares her expertise with other industry leaders.
“I have met with numerous utilities to share how Hydro One implemented the Edison Electric Institute Safety Classification and Learning Model and have been supporting them as they implement it at their companies,” she says.
Recently completing Schulich’s Mini-MBA program through York University, Holt has a strong desire to constantly learn and grow as a leader. Whether it is through reading books, listening to podcasts, or attending conferences, the Director of Health and Safety Field Support recognizes the value of continued education.
“Focus on your strengths – that’s probably one of the biggest things I have learned,” she says. “I read a book recommended by a mentor this year that was about focusing on what you are good at. Understand where your weaknesses are and fill those gaps with the team around you. But focus on your strengths.”
